Pathways Skill Development. Breaking Down Barriers in Employment.

Preparing You for Your Job Search

Our Services include:

An Initial Assessment and Employment Action Plan
Our Employment Counsellors will meet one-on-one with you and genuinely listen to your situation and circumstances.  They will help you identify the obstacles that need to be overcome and assist you in determining the steps you can take to move forward.  Many of those steps will likely be services offered right here on our site by Pathways.  By the end of this appointment you will have a plan that you have agreed to with your Employment Counsellor that will lead you toward employment.

Workshops on Employment and Job Searching
The On Track Workshop is a 3 week workshop you attend either in the mornings or afternoons.  Designed for those who have been out of the workforce for over a year, this workshop will help you get up to speed with what employers look for in valued employees and give you the skills to be those employees.  The workshop topics include:

  • Goal setting and problem solving
  • Conflict resolution
  • Communication skills
  • Understanding your tendencies and others (Using DiSC profile)
  • Using the computer in your job search
  • The basics of interviewing

The Workplace Success Workshop is a 1 week workshop devoted to giving you the skills not only to search for work effectively, but to get the interview, get the job, and be successful in the job.  It touches on some of the same topics as the On Track Workshop and adds sections on:

  • Transferable skills
  • The role of references
  • Expanding your job search tools
  • Behavioural interviewing
  • Accessing the hidden job market

The Intensive Job Acquisition (IJA) Workshop is also a 1 week workshop.  Building on the work done in either the On Track Workshop or the Workplace Success Workshop, the IJA focuses on gaining access to your targeted employers.  In this workshop we will spend even more time discussing ways of accessing the hidden job market and getting to those 80% of jobs that are never advertised.  Topics covered in this workshop include:

  • Using networking and information interviews
  • How to get past the receptionist on a cold call
  • Writing a cover letter to gain their notice
  • Putting together SAR (Situation, Action, Result) stories for the interview
  • Preparing for the interview
  • Creating a reference list

This workshop will also give you the opportunity to do a practice interview and includes a one-on-one session with an Employment Counsellor to fine-tune your resume.
